The Swarna Jayanti Shahari Rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) came into operation on 1 December 1997 to give gainful employment to the urban unemployed or underemployed poor, through self-employment ventures and wage employment.

It replaced three earlier urban poverty programmes: the Nehru Rozgar Yojana, the Urban Basic Services for the Poor programme and the Prime Minister's Integrated Urban Poverty Eradication Programme.

The Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana, run through banks for educated unemployed youth in both towns and villages, was not merged and continued on its own until it became part of PMEGP in 2008.

Answer: (d) Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana.

Why each option is right or wrong

Key point

SJSRY = NRY + UBSP + PMIUPEP; PMRY stayed outside.

Remember

SJSRY, 1 December 1997: urban poor; replaced NRY, UBSP and PMIUPEP.

Common mistakes

Exam tip

Three urban schemes merged; the youth self-employment scheme (PMRY) did not.
